DATA VISUALIZATON
A chocolate cake is more than just a dessert. It is a global system of data. As Giorgia Lupi said, data is everywhere - present in every moment, every event, every transaction
or interaction with someone else.
Why Chocolate Cake?
Chocolate cake is a publication
that carries personal meaning and rich layers of data
- a system of ingredients, circulation, labor, nutritions,
and trends - that hide beneath it. By breaking down
this dessert into components, I wanted to show how
a simple cake connect us to a worldwide networks of
production and how personal memories can be part of
a global narrative. Most of all, this project invites the
viewers to have a new perspective about the food they
consume and how it makes its way from earth into
our ovens and tables.

Process
We were assigned initially to generate potential perspectives to analyze the chosen individual theme (based on something we loved). The four perspectives that emerged from
this process are: ingredient structure; cocoa production and its global flow; who profits the most; homemade vs. bakery
cost comparison; and global chocolate cake trends.
All together they form a multi-layered understanding of the
chocolate cake. While each perspective operates independently, together they provide an overview of how a familiar dessert is shaped by factors ranging from
the science of its ingredients to the complexities of global trade and cultural interpretation.
